Other Places

Edith J. Carrier Arboretum

The arboretum’s winding woodland trails are beautifully landscaped with Virginia native plants, including rare and unusual species like puttyroot and lady’s slipper, both native orchids.

Habitat-specific plants also thrive here, such as those in the shale barren rich with white-haired leather flower, spike moss, hairy-lipped fern, shining sumac, and the rare Kate’s-mountain clover.

In spring, the trails boast a stunning display of wild phlox, Virginia bluebell, pinxter flower, and flame azalea. Visitors should take the time to breathe deeply while climbing the terraced herb garden and enjoy the serenity of a wooded swale carpeted with New York, hay-scented, ostrich, marginal shield, and Christmas ferns.

The Arboretum’s forested slopes and lowland swales are a haven for many tree species native to the mid-Appalachians, including the rare and endangered round-leaf birch (Betula uber).
