3.2.3 Azimuth or “Leader Azimuth Check II” (LAC II)
Purpose
The Azimuth or “Leader Azimuth Check II” (LAC II) is a 360-degree feedback tool designed to assess leadership potential and competencies in a military context. It is based on the Army Research Institute’s Leader Common Competencies (LCC) model, which has identified core competencies essential for effective leadership at all levels of the Army. The intended purpose of the tool is to provide feedback and development for leaders (Zaccaro et al., 1999).
Description
According to Zaccaro et al. (1999), the LAC II was jointly developed by the Army Research Institute (ARI), the Army War College (AWC), and the Industrial College of the Armed Forces (ICAF). The reliability of the instrument is periodically checked, with the Cronbach alpha for all elements typically being above 0.80. The original version (Azimuth Version 1) had 96 items representing twelve elements of leadership. The current version (Azimuth Version 2.1) contains 72 items representing key leadership elements from the Army leadership doctrine.
Access
The tool is available for free to Army personnel through the Army Resilience Directorate website.
