4.4.3 Improved Measure of Ethical Leadership (IMEL)

Purpose

The Improved Measure of Ethical Leadership (IMEL) is designed to comprehensively assess ethical leadership in the workplace. It is intended to evaluate ethical leadership behaviors (honesty, integrity, fairness, altruism, consistency, communication, and ethical guidance) and their impact on employee attitudes and organizational performance (Yukul et al., 2013). The IMEL is typically administered to leaders or managers in an organization responsible for leading teams or departments. These leaders are evaluated based on their ethical leadership behaviors and practices as perceived by their subordinates or peers.

Description

Yukul et al. (2013) created the Improved Measure of Ethical Leadership (IMEL) based on Leader-Member Exchange theory (LMX). The instrument uses a 6-point Likert scale.
